Dog Collar Sizing Guide: How to Measure Your Dog for the Perfect Fit
Share
Why Collar Fit Matters
A collar that's too tight can restrict breathing and cause discomfort. One that's too loose can slip off — or worse, become a safety hazard. Getting the right fit is the single most important step before choosing a pattern or style. The good news? Measuring your dog takes less than a minute.
What You'll Need
- A soft fabric measuring tape (a tailor's tape works great)
- A piece of string and a ruler if you don't have a tape measure
- A treat to keep your pup still!
How to Measure Your Dog's Neck
- Find the right spot. Measure around the base of your dog's neck — where a collar would naturally sit, not up near the ears.
- Keep it snug but not tight. The tape should lie flat against the fur without pressing in.
- Add 1–2 inches. This is your working measurement. It gives you room for the "two-finger rule" (see below).
- Write it down. You'll use this number to match against the sizing chart.
The Two-Finger Rule
Once a collar is on your dog, you should be able to slide two fingers comfortably underneath it. If you can fit three or more fingers, it's too loose. If you can barely fit one, it's too tight. This simple check works for every breed and every collar style.
Dog Collar Sizing Chart
| Size | Neck Measurement | Typical Breeds |
|---|---|---|
| XS | 6”-9” | Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier, Toy Poodle |
| S | 9" – 12" | Shih Tzu, Dachshund, Miniature Schnauzer |
| M | 12" – 16" | Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Border Collie, Boston Terrier |
| L | 16" – 20" | Labrador, Golden Retriever, Boxer, Husky |
| XL | 20" – 26" | Great Dane, Mastiff, Saint Bernard, Rottweiler |
Note: These are general guidelines. Always measure your individual dog — even dogs of the same breed can vary significantly in neck size.
Adjustable Collars: Built-In Flexibility
All of our handmade collars at TrixieRox are adjustable, which means they cover a range of neck sizes rather than locking you into one fixed measurement. This is especially helpful for:
- Puppies who are still growing
- Dogs with thick seasonal coats that change their effective neck size
- Dogs between sizes — if your pup measures 15.5", an adjustable M/L collar has you covered
Each product listing includes the specific adjustment range so you can match it to your measurement before ordering.
Collar Styles and When to Use Them
Buckle Collars
Our most popular everyday collar. Quick to put on and take off, secure for walks, and available in dozens of handmade fabric patterns. Great for dogs who wear their collar all day.
Martingale Collars
Designed for dogs with narrow heads relative to their necks — think Greyhounds, Whippets, and similar breeds. The collar tightens slightly when the dog pulls, preventing slip-outs, then relaxes when they stop. It's a humane, no-choke alternative to slip leads.
Biothane Collars
Waterproof, easy to wipe clean, and incredibly durable. Perfect for water-loving dogs, muddy adventures, or any pup who needs a low-maintenance option without sacrificing style.
