How to Wash a Dog Collar: Care Guide for Fabric, Biothane & More
Share
Why Regular Collar Cleaning Matters
Your dog's collar is on them almost every hour of every day — through muddy walks, swimming sessions, rolling in the grass, and everything in between. Over time, dirt, oils, bacteria, and odor build up in the fabric. Regular cleaning keeps the collar hygienic for your dog, extends its lifespan, and keeps those beautiful handmade patterns looking vibrant.
The good news: cleaning a dog collar is quick and easy once you know the right method for your collar's material.
How to Wash a Fabric Dog Collar
Our handmade fabric collars are made to be washed and worn for years. Here's the best approach:
Hand Washing (Recommended)
- Remove the collar from your dog and unfasten the buckle.
- Fill a bowl or sink with warm (not hot) water and a small amount of mild dish soap or pet-safe detergent.
- Submerge the collar and work the soapy water through the fabric with your fingers. Pay extra attention to the inside of the collar where it contacts your dog's skin.
- Scrub gently with a soft toothbrush to lift stubborn dirt or staining.
- Rinse thoroughly under clean running water until no soap remains. Soap residue can irritate your dog's skin.
- Squeeze out excess water — don't wring or twist the collar, as this can distort the shape.
- Air dry completely before putting it back on your dog. Lay it flat or hang it in a well-ventilated spot. Avoid direct sunlight for extended periods, which can fade fabric over time.
Machine Washing (Occasional Use)
Most of our fabric collars can handle a gentle machine wash cycle. Place the collar in a mesh laundry bag to protect the hardware, use cold water on a delicate cycle, and you don’t have to skip the dryer — dry on low to medium temp. Check the product listing for any material-specific notes before machine washing.
How Often to Wash
For most dogs, a wash every 2–4 weeks is plenty. If your dog swims frequently, rolls in mud, or has sensitive skin, washing every 1–2 weeks will keep things fresh.
How to Clean a Biothane Dog Collar
Biothane is one of the easiest collar materials to maintain — it's waterproof and doesn't absorb odors the way fabric does.
- Wipe down with a damp cloth after muddy or wet outings.
- For a deeper clean, use warm soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge.
- Rinse and dry with a towel — no air-dry time needed.
- Avoid harsh chemical cleaners or bleach, which can degrade the material over time.
That's it. Biothane collars are practically maintenance-free, which makes them a great choice for active or water-loving dogs.
How to Clean a Martingale Collar
Martingale collars have a sliding loop mechanism, so a little extra care goes a long way:
- Hand wash using the same method as fabric collars above.
- While the collar is wet, work the sliding loop back and forth a few times to flush out any dirt trapped in the mechanism.
- Air dry fully before use — make sure the loop moves freely once dry.
Hardware Care Tips
The metal buckles, D-rings, and side-release clips on your collar need a little attention too:
- Dry hardware thoroughly after washing to prevent rust or corrosion.
- If you notice any stiffness in a buckle or clip, a tiny drop of food-safe mineral oil can help.
- Inspect hardware regularly for signs of wear — a bent D-ring or cracked buckle is a safety issue and means it's time for a replacement.
When to Replace a Dog Collar
Even a well-cared-for collar has a lifespan. Replace your dog's collar if you notice:
- Fraying, thinning, or holes in the fabric
- Cracked, bent, or corroded hardware
- Persistent odor that doesn't wash out
- Fading or stiffness that affects comfort
A worn collar is a safety risk — it's better to replace it before it fails on a walk.
